[Tennis] Tennis Teams Compete in GPAC Individual Tournament
Doane Tennis competed in the GPAC Individual Tournament on Friday and Saturday, crowning the best in singles and doubles action. The two tournaments featured four singles brackets and two doubles brackets. In total, Doane players won seven of the 12 brackets.
The Tiger women continue to build on last year as they were dominant in their draws. In the "A" bracket of the singles tournament, Doane's Mariane Lima (JR/Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais) and Amber Weston (SO/Mead, Colo.) both advanced to the semifinals before suffering a loss. The final three brackets in singles play were all-Doane championships. In the "B" bracket, Ava Macke (SR/Omaha, Neb.) defeated Liz van der Torre (JR/Greeley, Colo.) in the finals. The "C" bracket saw Ashlyn Kucera (FR/Grand Island, Neb.) top Brylee Lauby (SR/Lexington, Neb.) in the championship match. Finally in the "D" bracket, Payton Stalder (SR/Omaha, Neb.) defeated Daniella Ruiz-Martinez (SR/Omaha, Neb.) in the finals.
In doubles action, Doane swept the two bracket titles. Lima and Weston, the top seed, teamed up to win the "A" bracket over the 2-seed from Midland. In the "B" bracket, Lauby and Kucera teamed up to win the all-Doane finals match over Stalder and Nina Ngo (JR/Crete, Neb.). Ngo was also a semifinalist in the "C" singles draw.
The Doane men finished with two champions. Donat Beke (SO/Algyo, Hungary) won the "C" bracket in the singles draw. Jorge Chevez (SR/Panama City, Panama) was defeated in the "A" bracket championship in a battle of the top two players in the conference. Midland's Miguel Abete won a pair of close sets. Esteban Gutierrez (SO/Panama City, Panama) was a semifinalist in the "A" bracket, falling to Abete in a third set tie-break. Federico Infante (SO/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) was a semifinalist in the "B" draw before falling in a third set tie-break. Sam Coy (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) was a semifinalist in the "C" draw, also falling in a third set tie-break. Parker Hansen (SR/Norfolk, Neb.) was a semifinalist in the "D" bracket.
In doubles play, Chevez and Gutierrez won the "A" doubles bracket. In the "B" draw, the team of Coy and Beke advanced to the semifinals before bowing out.
