Letter: Cupertino school talks safety, but hired Persky to coach girls?
School promotes safety, but
hired Persky to coach girls?
One of the things most important to me as a Cupertino High School student is safety at school. Despite the fact that my school has not experienced any violence, I can’t honestly state that I feel safe on campus due to decisions made by the district.
News that Lynbrook High School hired Aaron Persky as JV girls tennis coach emerged this past week. Former Judge Persky sentenced Brock Turner to three months in prison, though lawyers say Turner should have received at least six years.
Persky was fired by the district on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the district claimed that Persky was fired because of their concern for the safety of their students.
But my ultimate issue with the district’s decision is this: Why would a high school advocating for the physical and mental safety for their students on a regular basis even consider hiring a person who fails to acknowledge the full gravity of sexual assault to work with teenage girls?
