Who is Joao Sousa?

Born in Guimaraes on March 30, 1989 – the 30-year-old has been described as the best tennis player to come out of Portugal.

He first picked up a racket at the age of seven, thanks to his amateur tennis player dad.

At the age of 19, Sousa won his first professional title in a Futures doubles event.

Since then, he has managed just three ATP world titles, including at the Estoril Open in home country last year.

In Grand Slams, he has only reached the fourth round once as a singles player, coming in the US Open in 2018 – but did reach the Australian Open semi-finals with Leonardo Mayer in the men’s doubles in January.

At Wimbledon, he was knocked out in the third round by Jiri Vesely – the same tournament that Andy Murray collected his second title at SW19.

Is he playing Dan Evans at Wimbledon?

Next up at SW19 is British star Dan Evans.

The Portuguese ace beat 19-year-old Brit Paul Jubb in the first round before his shock win over Cilic.

And Sousa will feel like he has the upper hand over Evans, with the pair already meeting at Wimbledon this year.

Alongside Mayer, the Portuguese star beat the Brit and his fellow countryman Lloyd Glasspool in the men’s doubles on Thursday.

What is Sousa’s world ranking?

Sousa is currently ranked at No71 in the world.

He was as high as 28  in 2016.

Having dabbled in doubles tennis too, the Portuguese star is No39 in a list topped by USA’s Mike Bryan.
