There are waves around this morning, but despite adequate size, the quality is very much hit or miss. I didn’t see anyone in the water on the Collaroy to Narrabeen stretch, only one hopeful at Longy and a knot of keen types chasing lumps out in front of the surf club, a few rock-running the point.
Swell was 2 metres at 10 seconds from the south as of 0400 at the MHL buoy. It peaked at 3.5 metres yesterday evening and the swell models show it fading to around 1.5 metres by dusk today. At first light the wind was westerly 5-7 kts. It’s set to move to the east and then the E-NE this afternoon, but not to pick up much at all. Tide was high at 0540 and will be back to the 0.6 m low at 1240.
Sunday looks to be down a bit more and staying south, but with light wind and partly cloudy skies. Interestingly the swell models show the average period going from 10-ish seconds Sunday morning to 12 seconds by dusk. The GFS model currently projects it to hit nearly 17 seconds overnight and to still be in the 14-16 second range on Monday. The Bureau’s warning that conditions could be deceptive across Sunday-Monday as the long-period sets will be turning up at irregular intervals.

A high pressure system in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge over the northeast of the state. Winds shifting northeasterly over the weekend as the high moves away towards New Zealand. A southerly change moves into southern waters on Tuesday as a trough extends offshore.
