My Experience at Surf Camp Australia – Camilo Lopez – Morton
This weekend I had the great opportunity to go to Surf Camp Australia. Having been interning with them from the office for a couple of weeks, I had gained a bunch of insight on the behind the scenes aspect, now I got to see what the camp looks like. Needless to say, this weekend on location, gave me a better idea of the work I was doing, for the company I was working for.
My trip started off on a Friday evening with a calm ride on a train down to the camp. Being with friends from my program made the ride more fun and enjoyable and we were comfortable and able to interact with each other. Once we arrived at the train station. There were Surf Camp vans waiting for us to drive 10ish minutes down the coast. Once at camp we all gathered under the central gazebo eating area to be given a series of talks from Diogo and Zac (the camp’s mom and dad) on what to expect, rules, etc. Then we split up into the groups we wanted to bunk with. Once we got assigned our cabins we split up and went to settle in. Once settled in, we went on a quick walk to see the beach we would spend our time on. Once headed back, we prepared and went to bed.
The campers were split into two groups, allowing us to be staggered so we are not crowded during eating time and during surfing time. I was happy because I got the early group Saturday morning (we would flip our times with the other group Sunday). We got up, had a quick carb heavy breakfast, and put on our wetties. Then headed to the beach where we grabbed our boards, split based on previous experience, and met with our coaches on the sand. In my case, being in the beginner-intermediate group with 16 others, we had Luis, Matt, and Tommy through the two days. Luis, an extremely experienced military man, with years of experience in France, Peru, and all over the world, started us off. We went over the basics since in theory, our group was slightly more advanced than the others. The waves this morning were around thigh height, which were ideal to get back into the water to regain the basics especially using an 8ft foam board. After two hours of surfing, we headed back, washed off, and had a burger for lunch. We rested for a bit and then headed back for another two hour session. The waves were a bit calmer, so we did a bit more theory before getting out. Post surf, we had pasta, with really good chicken and sausages for dinner, before going out to the pub on the top of the hill, which was a fun time. Then I headed to the beach at night to look at the stars which were insane.
The following morning, my group got to rest a bit longer than the other group, before having breakfast. We then head out to the beach where the waves were much better than the previous day, allowing us to go out slightly deeper to the bigger waves. Finishing up, we headed back and had a quick lunch before dipping, by either bus or train (I took the bus back).
Overall, this weekend went by really quickly, and was a great experience hosted by Surf Camp Australia.
