The Goat’s Extremely quick and short forecast
Issued Friday 25 September 2025
Corker of a day today with occasional sizable good quality sets coming in, lightly feathered by a light offshore breeze. Those should be less and less by tomorrow, if at all. Then there should be fun sized waves for the kids and others on school hols all week.
The MHL buoy is saying water temp is around 21 but that is 10 ks out. At the beach it’s decidedly cooler than that. Given the air temp forecast for Saturday that will provide a shock to the system for those venturing in for a dip without a wettie.
The CPI (Car Park Index) becomes a less reliable indicator of surf quality and water comfort around this time of year. Perhaps more reliable is the SiWI (Swimmers in Water Index) – though even that should be seasonally adjusted for the kids who feel nothing, and for those few who will go swimming at any time of the year without a wetsuit.
Flags go up tomorrow. Swim at the red and yellow flags. Boards stay outside them.
Surf outlook is
Saturday: around 1-1.5 metres at places open to dead South; watch the surf before you go in to see if there are still some sets around, so you don’t get caught by surprise
Sunday: similar
Monday: ditto or less
Tuesday: ditto ditto
Wednesday: same same but from the North East
Thursday: similar but from South East
Friday: down some more.
Have a good one.

PS If you’re looking for something for the family to do over the long weekend, there will be a historic photo exhibition at Avalon Beach SLSC all weekend as part of the Club’s 100th Anniversary. The first IRB for surf rescue will also be on display, on loan from the Australian National Maritime Museum.. It’s the first time it’s been allowed out of the Museum since it was donated to them by Warren Mitchell OAM who developed it at the club and successfully trialled it in 1969. Maybe you’ve been helped out by an IRB at some stage..The exhibition will all be open to the public and it’s free! How good is that!?. Score!!
