Surfing Legend’s Son ‘Fighting for His Life’ After Being Hit by Car
The 20-year-old son of a surfing legend is "fighting for his life" after being struck by a car in Hawaii over the weekend.
Dakota Briley, the son of iconic Pipeline surfer Shawn Briley, was hit by a car while standing on the side of the Kamehameha Highway on Oahu's North Shore on Saturday. According to a GoFundMe raising money for his recovery, Briley was struck by one vehicle and pinned between two other cars.
The young man suffered devastating injuries, including fractures of his legs, pelvis, ribs, and skull, as well as severe damage to his spine.
On Monday, Briley's younger brother Ryder shared an update on Instagram, saying his sibling "needs a miracle" and asking for prayers.
“Please continue to pray for our Dakota, he’s in really rough shape and needs a miracle from god,” Ryder wrote. “His ribs have been crushed, his spine is severed and broken in multiple places, the back of his skull has been crushed, fractured in 8 places, from the hips down his legs have been crushed. He needs a miracle, please pray for God to make him whole again.”
A surfer just like his dad, Dakota Briley has established himself as "one of the North Shore underground’s barnstorming crop of young chargers," according to Stab Magazine.
Shawn Briley is regarded as one of the all-time greats at Pipeline, one of them most dangerous waves in the world. The winner of the Tavarua Tube Classic in 1995, Briley nearly died in the water in 2017 but remains devoted to the sport.
We're praying and hoping his son is able to make a full recovery from his serious injuries.
