ROAD TO RECOVERY

Marc Paré reflects on a fifth-place finish at the Japan World Cup before having his world title aspirations rocked after sustaining a Lisfranc fracture in Maui, Hawaii.

REJOINING THE SIMMER FAMILY

It’s been awesome! Everything happened really fast, but we always kept a good relationship and I’ve known the people behind Simmer since I was 12, so it really felt like coming back home and it felt like the right move to make.

JAPAN WORLD CUP AND ASPIRATIONS

I was a bit upset at first, as I thought my sailing took me to the final, but I ended up missing out by a narrow margin. After analysing it I came to realise that 5th was still a solid result to start the year and I would be able to build upon that for the world title race. My aspirations for this year were definitely to fight for the top spots and try to fight for a world title.

INJURY UPDATE

Yes… Unfortunately, during my last session on Maui I sustained quite a bad injury in my Lisfranc complex (mid-foot area). It was during an over rotated turn where I forced all my weight forward on the board to rotate into a taka. Unfortunately, halfway through the taka there was an excessive amount of pressure on my mid-foot due to the leverage from the strap, but to make things event worse the wave broke on top of my board – I then felt a big snap under my foot arch and my foot gave up. I knew straightaway that it was bad.

SURGERY & TIMESCALE TO RETURN

I was immediately in contact with a really good German foot specialist who had already fixed my other foot before – about a week after sustaining my injury he fixed my other one. It’s hard to tell exactly when I’ll be back and ready to compete, but let’s just say that the Gran Canaria World Cup is going to be very tight. However, I’m not losing faith!

REHABILITATION PROCESS

I have a 6-week non-weight bearing period, when that’s done, I’ll need to have some new X-rays done and then the surgeon will check the situation. After being given the all clear I’ll be able to start rehab. Basically, I’m going to have to learn to walk again and undergo physiotherapy to regain the proper range of mobility in my foot. So, I will now focus on getting my body on point for when I come back and I will go to Sweden to work closely with Simmer to help develop some new products!
