Micro for Boxing Day morning at Dee Why

0 16

Hello Friends,

The southerly arrived at 0700 and as of 0900 it was 10-15 kts and beginning to texture the surface at Dee Why. Dee Why looked to be way to small to surf, but there was one keen type in the water up the beach from Kiddies. My guess is that you’re looking at knee high sets max. As of 0700 swell was a metre from the SSE at close to 12 seconds out at the MHL buoy. Water temp is a toasty 23-24C and clean pretty much everywhere.

Tomorrow there’s a strong wind warning for southerlies  in the 20-30 kt range (along with a 70% chance of showers). South swell should pick up, but it looks like being short period, local stuff. There might be some residuals for playing on Tuesday – but with south wind on top of it. Right now the back half of the week looks small to unsurfable.

A friend just told me that he’s tested positive for COVID. He was at a gym earlier in the week and his instructor who’d been at an office Christmas party was infectious. In early December the Northern Beaches LGA was seeing 5-8 new cases a day. On the 15th it juped to 27 and started going up. Yesterday it was 172. Bear in mind that we’re only detecting a percentage of the cases. FWIW, I’ve seen estimates that actual case numbers could be somewhere in the neighbourhood of 5x what’s being picked up.
Bottom line: mask up when you’re inside places that aren’t your home. Up your mask game with an N95. Get some rapid antigen tests (I bought them online for $10 per test) and check your infectivity levels just before meeting with others*, or 3-5 days after a known exposure.
*to protect them, obviously!

Go well, stay safe and have top old Boxing Day!

After the big blow I can see the tip of the point at Turimeta from RealSurf’s crowsnest. I once heard a bodyboarder call that spot Suicides.

Weather Situation

A low pressure trough is moving north along the southern coast and will reach the Hunter Coast in the evening, bringing a southerly wind change in the wake. The southerly winds will strengthen on Monday with the trough moving onto the northern coast early in the new week as a cold front brushes the south. The winds then will become east to southeasterly as a strong high pressure system over the Bight slowly moves across Bass Strait through the first half of the new week.
