Women surfers battle ‘insane’ waves in Maui (VIDEO)
The rules of big-wave surfing did not apply Monday on the island of Maui. At the place called Peahi, better known as “Jaws,” a much-anticipated contest was postponed after four hours of competition because the waves were too big.
“Majestic, beautiful, insane,” said San Francisco’s Bianca Valenti, who was among the surfers risking their lives in treacherous conditions. “But really crazy. Eerie. Most challenging wave in the world.”
This was the second stop on the World Surf League’s Big Wave Tour — the third and final event will be held at Mavericks — and it will be completed Tuesday morning if the conditions allow.
