California awaits for surfing mad Durban homeschoolers

0 9

DURBAN - Homeschoolers are hitting the sports scene.

Four teenagers from KwaZulu-Natal who have made it into the World Junior Championships juggle every normal day between their studies, at home, and their passion in the waves. The championship will take place in October and November, in California, USA.

The four Durbanites, are aged between 14 and 16, are homeschooled and enjoying it.

“This gives my son Luke time to take part in the circuits and also enter other competitors,” said his mother, Dene Thompson.

Meanwhile, homeschoolers are also active on the sports front in the Midlands. Pietermaritzburg-based homeschoolers will leave their isolated home-cum-classrooms to gather together for an athletics sports day in the provincial capital, Pietermaritzburg.

The homeschoolers, who have no school colours as traditional schools would, will compete barefoot taking part in track events with their parents cheering them on in the sidelines. The event is considered the biggest homeschooling competition in Pietermaritzburg.

"Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game," read a notice about the event.

Off-beat prizes will go to the team with most awesome name and the team that comes dressed the best.
