Michael Conforto Ruins Edward Cabrera’s No-Hitter with Awful Defense
This was horrendous as Edward Cabrera entered the sixth inning with a no-hitter, and Michael Conforto completely botched a routine fly ball in right field. The Chicago Cubs have been without Seiya Suzuki, so Matt Shaw and Conforto have been filling in. So far, these guys have looked rough on defense, and this is unforgivable by Conforto.
The ball hit by CJ Kayfus had an expected batting average of .050. Conforto came in on the fly ball, paused, and by the time he rushed back, the ball landed on the warning track.
Suzuki is expected to return from the injured list soon, and at this point, there’s no reason that Conforto should stick around. You cannot have these types of plays when you’re one of the last guys on the bench.
Cabrera battled control issues all game long, but he was keeping Cleveland’s offense in check, so this was a brutal way to watch his no-hitter go up in flames. Luckily, Nico Hoerner and Miguel Amaya’s great defensive play later in the sixth inning kept the game a scoreless tie.
Cabrera ended up walking two more batters and left the game with the bases loaded. Caleb Thielbar came in and got out of the jam, making Bo Naylor pop up to center field.
