J.League revamps season to follow European season, but will play cut down comp to kick off 2026
December 16 – Japan’s J.LEAGUE is making a major change in 2026 that will see it switch its calendar year schedule to follow the European calendar that straddles the year end, starting in August and ending in May.
The league says the change is “a new season, built for a new era – looking beyond Japan, to Asia and the world.”
It brings the J.League into alignment with Europe’s major leagues and in particular the transfer and player release windows.
