Shemar Turner Admits Real Reason He Was Overjoyed Bears Drafted Him

0 18

Shemar Turner had plenty of valid reasons to be thrilled when the Chicago Bears called his name in the draft. As a 2nd round pick, it meant a more sizable rookie contract compared to going in later rounds. More importantly, it meant achieving his childhood dream. Turner had always known playing in the NFL was his ultimate goal. There was no Plan B. Every waking moment was spent working to make it a reality. One can imagine that the phone call from the Bears was exhilarating and relieved.

Then again, he would’ve felt that way with any team calling him. However, Turner admitted to Larry Mayer of Chicagobears.com that Chicago taking him made it extra sweet. No, it wasn’t because he’s a fan of the team or grew up watching them. It is because they employed one of his favorite players.

Who are you most excited to team up with in Chicago?

Grady Jarrett. My junior year is when I probably watched the most NFL ball, and when I was watching, it was him.

Turner would’ve been in high school during Grady Jarrett’s peak years with the Atlanta Falcons in the late 2010s. Considering both are similar in size, temperament, and position, it is only natural that Turner would’ve gravitated to watching the former Pro Bowler.

Jarrett is a perfect mentor for Shemar Turner.

Part of it comes from his obvious experience and leadership. The man was beloved in Atlanta for his ability to set the tone and motivate teammates. The other part is knowing Shemar Turner idolizes him. That will make it easy to teach him. The best pupil is one who is willing and eager to learn. Jarrett has already said he is ready to teach the young guys anything they need to know, especially Turner. If the Bears’ rookie learns all of the same tricks that make him a star for the Falcons, they’ll have a monster in the middle for years to come. Watching those two work together in training camp and into the season will be loads of fun.
