A man was shot outside of a popular Wrigleyville bar Thursday night and a person of interest is in custody according to police. The shooting happened at about 7 pm, in the 900 block of W. Waveland, near Murphy’s Bleachers, a high-traffic area in Wrigleyville, especially during game days. The Cubs were off on Thursday ahead of their weekend series against the White Sox at Wrigley Field.

The 26-year-old man who was shot is in good condition after he was hospitalized. The victim was on the sidewalk when he was shot in the left arm. At this time the offender is unknown. A gun was found near the incident.

The shooter’s identity was unknown, police said, but Town Hall (19th) District officers found a gun near the shooting site and took a person of interest into custody.

The man was taken in good condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Belmont Area detectives were investigating the shooting, police said.

According to witnesses there were two groups of youths fighting outside Waveland when gunshots suddenly rang out in the neighborhood. A witness told WGN News that the man who was shot was not involved in the fight that led to the spray of bullets.

“It seemed like the bigger group was walking away going east, and then I went in the bathroom and 15, 20 seconds later, I just heard a bunch of gunshots,” Tom Morahan said. “I got down closer than I wanted to be on the port-a-potty floor, and then I got out maybe 20-30 seconds after that, and then I went into Murphy’s bar. It was kind of crazy.”

An investigation is ongoing.
