WWE legend John Cena reveals past private health battle with skin cancer
WWE icon John Cena revealed a past health scare – and his personal story will hope to raise awareness about his cancer diagnosis.
The 47-year-old Cena recently opened up on his past skin cancer battle.
Cena took part in an interview with People on Monday and shared that he’s been assigned to be the spokesperson for one of the popular skin care brand Neutrogena’s new lines of sunscreen.
But the story came with a revelation that Cena had a past skin cancer scare.
Cena didn’t take care of his skin and didn’t use sun cream despite being exposed to the sun throughout his 20s until he decided to get a checkup at a dermatologist appointment.
“I was stubborn. I didn’t want to have a routine, and I also thought the problem would never reach me,” he told the outlet.
“And it’s one of those things where I had a ton of exposure with minimal protection and it caught up with me.
“It wasn’t until I went to a dermatologist and got a skin checkup and had a cancerous spot removed from my right pec.
The cancerous spot was able to be removed without an issue, but the WWE legend was luckily referred to a dermatologist.
Cena praised his skin doctor, saying he was fortunate to have a professional by his side during the process.
“I was very lucky to have a great dermatologist who kind of, I guess for lack of a better term, held me by the hand and let me know that I wasn’t alone,” he said.
“The stats on this are overwhelming, but as much as I learn about them, those numbers don’t mean anything.
“I think the best way to hammer home a point is human-to-human connection.
“And I as a human can tell you: Man, that phone call’s not what you want to get because it is unpredictable and you don’t know how bad it’s going to be.”
Cena noted he was required to have another mole removed that now leaves a mark near his right shoulder.
He has teamed up with Neutrogena protective lotion, which is called Ultra Sheer Mineral Face Liquid Sunscreen SPF 70.
Per the skincare brand Nivea, a sunscreen product with SPF 50 gives approximately 98 percent protection from UVB rays, compared to around 96.7 percent provided by products with an SPF of 30.
Cena is making sure people wear sunblock and to not end up in a similar situation he dealt with.
“It’s something you should exercise to allow you to be who you are for a longer period of time,” Cena said about wearing sun block.
“We all love to get out there on a sunny day and enjoy what the world has to offer.
“Just take that one extra step.”
