Editor’s note: A version of this post was first published on July 31, 2023.

A company in Virginia that specializes in animal rescues and relocating unwanted snakes in people’s yards posted a photo of three venomous copperhead snakes that seemed to have disappeared among fallen leaves.

K2C Wildlife Encounters stated in a Facebook post, “Look what happens when you have copperheads in leaves…magic, they disappear!!”

Some Facebook commenters suspected the photo was doctored in some way, one saying, “The color is way off, dial back the green and they become much more visible,” and another saying, “Photo seems edited…Copperheads are not chameleons, they do not change color. The snakes magically turned green???”

Nevertheless, most seemed to enjoy the search. Among the comments on the Facebook post:

“Yep, I would have been bitten. Lol.”

“I could only find 2.”

“I spotted two immediately, the third one took me a while longer. Nature is beautiful!”

“Spotted all three but would have easily stepped on all three. Great camo.”

“I only saw the one above, to the right. Totally scoured the page with my eyes and couldn’t see the other 2 until I saw the red outline of them.”

On Friday, K2C Wildlife Encounters posted a photo on Facebook that outlined the three copperheads.

“I had just released them, so I knew where they were,” Bonnie Keller of K2C Wildlife Encounters told Newsweek. “But it was amazing how easily they blended in, so I took the picture.”
