Lionel Messi OUT of PSG’s clash with Montpellier as Poch sweats on fitness for Champions League game against Man City

PSG confirm injured Lionel Messi will miss their Ligue 1 tie with Montpellier on Saturday and will be in race to be fit for Man City clash next week.

The club announced this week that their new signing underwent an MRI scan which showed evidence of bone contusion, ruling him out of their away win at Metz on Wednesday.

But fans will be pleased to hear that the injury is not serious and the Argentine could be fit in time for their Champions League tie against Man City at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday.

The club stated they expect another update on Messi’s condition on Sunday, just 48 hours before their European showdown with the Premier League champions.

Messi, 34, has not had the easiest start to life in France since controversially joining the nine-time league champions on a free transfer back in August.

He signed a two-year deal until June 2023 with an option for an extra year and made his debut as a second half substitute in a 2-0 win over Reims a month ago.

His first start came in the Champions League against Club Brugge, in which the Parisians were frustrated by the Belgian underdogs and held to a 1-1 draw, with Messi unable to make any real impact.

He then started his first league game at home to rivals Lyon, but again struggled to show his best form and was eventually substituted in the 76th minute by Mauricio Pochettino.

Messi was visibly furious at being withdrawn and did not celebrate as his team scored a last-minute winner through his fellow Argentine Mauro Icardi.

It looked like the former Barcelona captain refused to shake his manager’s hand and gestured with his arms if to show his disagreement with the decision.

Messi had reportedly agreed a new deal to stay at Barcelona after his contract had ended but was forced to leave due to the club’s financial problems and LaLiga’s strict financial fair play laws.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner will be in a race to be fit in time to face former boss Pep Guardiola’s Man City on Tuesday and will be desperate to get off the mark for his new club.

PSG are currently top of Ligue 1 with seven wins out of seven and 20 goals scored, seven points clear of their closest and fiercest rivals Marseille.

The Parisians were frustrated in the league last season as they finished just one point behind winners Lille, losing out on what would have been their eighth league title in nine years.

But having strengthened their squad with the likes of Messi, Sergio Ramos, Gini Wijnaldum, Achraf Hakimi, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Achraf Hakimi, PSG will be firm favourites to reclaim the title this year.

They also managed to retain want-away star Kylian Mbappe for another season, who has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid in the near future.
