WBSC U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup 2026: Contenders set for Opening Round battle in Sincelejo
The most important men’s softball event of the year will open in 10 days in Sincelejo, Colombia, as 12 teams from the five Olympic continents take the field at Eduardo Porras Stadium and 20 de Enero Stadium to compete in the WBSC U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup 2026.
The teams have been divided into two groups for the Opening Round:
- Group A: No. 1 Japan, No. 3 Argentina, No. 7 New Zealand, No. 9 Czechia, No. 13 Colombia (host), and No. 14 South Africa.
- Group B: No. 2 Venezuela, No. 4 Canada, No. 6 Australia, No. 8 Mexico, No. 10 Singapore, and No. 19 Denmark.
Eight of the 12 participating teams have won at least one medal in a Men’s Softball World Cup across all age categories, with each group featuring four. Here’s a closer look at each group.
Powerhouses lead a highly competitive Group A
World No. 1 Japan, No. 3 Argentina, No. 7 New Zealand and No. 9 Czechia have all reached the podium at least once in a Men’s Softball World Cup. They are joined by hosts Colombia (No. 13) and No. 14 South Africa.
Argentina, Japan and New Zealand enter the tournament as the main contenders in the group. All three are consistent performers on the world stage, and this edition is no exception. Japan and Argentina both secured medals in the inaugural U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup in 2023—silver and bronze, respectively—while the U-23 Black Sox remain a perennial threat in any competition. They are the favourites to advance to the Super Round.
Japan arrive in Sincelejo as back-to-back U-18 World Champions (2020, 2023) and silver medallists from the first U-23 World Cup. Their roster includes 10 players with international experience at youth level, although they lack veteran presence from the senior national team. It remains to be seen whether that will impact them in high-pressure moments or if they can continue their success at youth level.
Argentina will look to reaffirm their status as a global powerhouse. Senior national team members Luciano Biondi, Khalil Luna and Nahuel Saenz headline a squad aiming to add another medal to the country’s growing legacy in the discipline.
New Zealand are chasing their first U-23 World Cup medal. Liam Potts and Tane Mumu—both part of the squad that finished sixth in the 2023 edition and silver medallists at the WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup 2025—bring valuable experience and leadership to a team capable of challenging the top contenders.
Czechia, the European champions, will aim to replicate their historic bronze medal performance at the U-18 World Cup 2020. Although they did not reach the Super Round in 2023, a seventh-place finish showed their competitiveness, and they have the potential to upset one of the group’s leading teams.
In their third appearance in a Men’s Softball World Cup, and first as hosts, Colombia will look to harness strong local support in Sincelejo to elevate their performance. After 10th-place finishes in their previous appearances at the senior (2013) and U-18 (2023) World Cups, they will aim to contend for a place in the Super Round.
South Africa, who finished last in the 2023 edition and did not compete in the U-18 World Cup 2023, enter the tournament looking to take a step forward. A win on Opening Day against Colombia would put them on track to contend for a Super Round spot.
A wide-open battle shapes Group B
Group B promises to deliver an intense battle from the very first pitch. The group features defending U-23 World Champions Australia, reigning Men’s Softball World Cup winners Venezuela, U-18 silver medallists Mexico, and perennial powerhouse Canada. Adding to the mix are emerging nation Singapore and debutants Denmark, further increasing the level of unpredictability.
With so much quality across the board, it is difficult to identify clear favourites to advance. Australia, however, enter as the team to beat as they begin their title defence. Canada, Mexico and Venezuela, three traditional rivals from the Americas, arrive in Sincelejo aiming to challenge the Australian dominance, while Singapore will look to make a breakthrough and secure big wins on the world stage.
The defending champions bring one of the tournament’s biggest stars in Jack Besgrove, MVP of the 2023 U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup, who led Australia to U-23 and senior world titles in consecutive years. The key question will be whether the team can provide enough support around him, both offensively and defensively, to secure a second consecutive title.
Canada, one of the most storied nations in men’s softball history, are once again strong contenders. Led by Nick White, their roster includes nine returning players from the Americas Qualifier in La Pampa, Argentina, where they secured silver and qualification for the World Cup.
Mexico, who finished fourth in the inaugural edition of this event, will aim to reach the podium in Sincelejo. With Carlos Parra leading from the pitching circle, Christian Del Valle behind the plate and David Díaz anchoring the infield, Mexico boast a new generation of talent. After winning silver at the U-18 World Cup in 2023 and making an impact in the senior category -highlighted by a Pan American Championship title this year- they have a strong opportunity to claim another medal on the global stage.
Venezuela are enjoying a historic moment after winning their first-ever Men’s Softball World Cup title last year in Prince Albert, Canada. That breakthrough could mark a turning point for the programme, and the U-23 team will aim to build on that momentum with another strong performance in Sincelejo.
Singapore continue to establish themselves as one of the fastest-rising nations in men’s softball. After a competitive showing at The World Games 2025, including a win over Australia and a narrow loss to Canada, they broke into the top 10 of the WBSC World Rankings and now aim to take another step forward with a strong result in this tournament.
Denmark, the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, make their debut in the competition. After securing a silver medal in their continental qualifier, they return to the world stage with the ambition to challenge more established programmes and gain valuable experience at the highest level.
