Sports briefs: Marin softball rivalry takes college stage

0 5

Former MCAL rivals Sadie Leonard and Rose Malen squared off for the first time in college in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday between Williams College and Chapman University.

Leonard, a former standout at Redwood High, started for Williams and pitched all seven innings, allowed two hits and one earned run in a 4-2 victory. Leonard, who is fresh off being named the New England Small Collegiate Athletic Conference pitcher of the week, had 15 strikeouts in the game.

Malen, a former Marin Catholic standout, went 6.2 innings and allowed nine hits and four earned runs while striking out five.

Leonard and Malen battled each other throughout last season, meeting four times with Redwood winning the two regular-season games and MC winning the two postseason encounters. All four meetings required extra innings.

• Dominican University split a doubleheader with Chaminade on Monday. After dropping the first game 3-0, the Penguins came back to take the second game 7-3. Dominican freshman Annabelle Burke drove in a pair of runners, while freshman Marina Medina led the way with three hits. Senior Shelby Keltner allowed three runs in her 3 1/3 innings of work while freshman reliever Jayla Cadena was awarded the win after giving up just one hit and no runs in her effort for the Penguins (12-13, 9-5 PacWest).

The Panthers (3-1, 2-1) got hits from six of their starting players.

San Domenico avoided the shutout in a 4-1 loss to Lick. The Panthers’ lone win came at No. 1 doubles, where Charlie Aspatore and Harry Wan won 6-2, 5-7, 12-10.
