10 charged in deadly Bronx mass shootings: 'Brazen violence'
CONCOURSE, the Bronx (PIX11) --- Ten people, including several teenagers, have been charged in two mass shootings in the Bronx, including a deadly shooting where nearly 60 rounds were fired during a basketball tournament at Haffen Park, prosecutors said Monday.
Davean Reyes, 20, and two teens, ages 16 and 17, are accused of opening fire at the basketball tournament where two people were killed on the night of Aug. 23 in Baychester, including 17-year-old Anthonaya Campbell, authorities said.
Campbell was fatally shot in the head and died on Sept. 8. Jaceil Blanks, 32, was shot to death in the torso. Three other people were injured when 57 shots rang out at Haffen Park, including a 29-year-old woman who had a bullet lodged in her lung, prosecutors said.
About a week later, 24-year-old Jamari Henry was killed in a drive-by shooting near 686 Allerton Ave. in retaliation for the Haffen Park incident, authorities said. Henry was at the park the day of the first shooting.
Prosecutors alleged Heron Martin, 21, Shamir Murray, 19, Kai Oulai, 19, Jose
Gomez, 18, and a 16-year-old suspect drove to Allerton Avenue in a Honda Accord, got out of the car, and opened fire 13 times, hitting Henry four times. Four other men were injured in the Sept. 1 shooting.
The defendants then fled in the Honda and crashed into a home near Hone and Arnow avenues during a police chase, prosecutors said.
A day later, 21-year-old Jontay Davis, a brother of one of the Allerton Avenue shooting victims, was fatally shot in the head and dumped behind a Bronx hospital, authorities said.
Prosecutors alleged Desean Edwards, 22, and other unapprehended suspects shot Davis near Allerton Avenue and Bronx Park East and drove the victim to Saint Barnabas Hospital on the morning of Sept. 2. Edwards was charged with murder, manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon, and a slew of other charges.
Reyes and the teens were charged with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the Haffen Park shootout. They were arraigned and held without bail.
Martin, Murray, Oulai, Gomez, and the 16-year-old suspect in the drive-by shooting on Allerton Avenue were indicted for murder, officials said.
“We cannot and will not stand for such brazen violence and bloodshed in our communities. Thirteen guns were recovered during the investigations, and some of the firearms are linked by ballistics to 13 other incidents of gunfire. It is time for a concerted, precise and fierce effort with the NYPD and our federal partners to stem the prolific weapons," Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clak said.
