POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- An investigation has been opened by the New York Attorney General's Office into the death of Brian Czornyj, who was killed in a Poughkeepsie officer-involved shooting on June 5.

Officials with the AG's office said the Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to a 911 call for an alleged assault with a sword at a home. When law enforcement arrived, they found two men standing side-by-side, holding a single sword.

One of the men, later identified as Czornyj, looked uninjured and held the sword by the handle, while the other older man held the sword blade and appeared to have injuries. The AG's office said law enforcement directed commands at Czornyj to drop the weapon, but both men allegedly didn't comply, and an officer discharged his weapon.

After Czornyj was shot, he was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead, while the other man was treated and released later in the evening. The AG's office investigates all incidents where a police or peace officer may have caused the death of a person by an act or oversight.
