ASHLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Greene County District Attorney's Office announced that 41-year-old James Hartley was sentenced before Judge Jennifer Sober on Tuesday to 15 years in state prison in a firearm-involved burglary case. The Ashland man was also ordered to serve five years of probation following his release.
On December 27, 2021, deputies responded to a house on State Route 23 in Ashland after the homeowner reported that a burglar, later identified as Hartley, had broken into his residence. The report led to Hartley fleeing the scene and running into a nearby wooded area, resulting in a manhunt with law enforcement.
After two days of searching, deputies located Hartley at a vacant home he had been using as a hideout. Hartley admitted to firing a lever-action rifle at deputies as they tried to take him into custody before he ultimately surrendered.
Hartley pleaded guilty to four counts of burglary, attempted aggravated assault on a police officer, criminal use of a firearm, and criminal possession of stolen property. He stated at his sentencing that he had no remorse for his actions.
