Arrest made following officer-involved shooting in South Glens Falls
SOUTH GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The suspect that was shot by a state trooper in South Glens Falls on Wednesday was arrested. The New York State Police said Billy Cassell III, 45, of Kingsbury, faces multiple charges.
Charges
- Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon
- Menacing a police officer
- Unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle
- Fourth-degree criminal mischief
- Second-degree reckless endangerment
State Police said they were searching for Cassell on Wednesday for an active arrest warrant. When they found him driving a vehicle in South Glens Falls he allegedly fled, beginning a vehicle pursuit.
The chase ended after about two minutes when Cassell crashed the vehicle into a home located at the intersection of State Route 9 and Catherine Street, said law enforcement. Cassell then allegedly fled on foot carrying a loaded shotgun before trying to hide in a home.
It is alleged that Cassell raised the shotgun at the State Police instead of complying with orders to drop the weapon, causing one trooper to fire his firearm three times. Troopers said Cassell sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and was transported to Albany Medical Center before being arrested.
Cassell was arraigned in Moreau Town Court and placed in the Saratoga County Correctional Facility without bail.
Another passenger that was in the truck with Cassell at the time of the crash and allegedly fled on foot as well. They were also taken into custody and face a misdemeanor charge for having a controlled substance.
