Stray bullet in officer-involved shooting caused water damage at Malta apartments
MALTA, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A majority of impacted tenants at the Ellsworth Apartments in Malta have reportedly returned to their units after the building was evacuated during a State Trooper-involved shooting on April 10, officials announced on Monday. The apartments were deemed temporarily uninhabitable after the building sustained water damage on Thursday.
Town of Malta Code Enforcement Officer Erika Mitchell confirmed with NEWS10 that the water damage at the apartments was caused by a stray bullet during the shooting. Mitchell stated a bullet struck a water line that feeds the building's sprinkler system.
Although the strike didn't set off the sprinkler system itself, about half of the building was affected by the damage. Repairs on the line were completed on Friday, and residents started moving back this weekend.
The troopers involved in the incident were identified on Monday. It was the second of two officer-involved shootings in Malta last week.
