WELSH, La. (KLFY) -- A Jeff Davis Parish sheriff's deputy looking to assist a man seen walking along the highway near Welsh ended with a shooting and an arrest, authorities said.

Mark Buller, 44, of Iowa, La., is charged with the following:

• Attempted first degree murder 
• Attempted disarming of a police officer 
• Disarming a police officer 
• Aggravated second degree battery 
• Resisting a police officer with force or violence 
• Attempted theft of motor vehicle 

According to the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office, Patrol Sgt. Josh Clement was patrolling the area of La. 99 south of La 102 north of Welsh at approximately 7:37 p.m. Friday, when he observed a man walking northbound on La. 99. Due to the cold weather and lack of light on the highway, Clement stopped to assist the individual, officials said. 

Clement contacted the man, later identified as Buller, and a physical altercation took place that caused Clement to discharge his weapon, authorities said. 

State Police said Buller was able to gain possession of the deputy’s Taser and use it against him before attempting to take the deputy’s patrol car. The deputy then discharged his service weapon, but did not strike Buller.

Both Clement and Buller were transported to local hospitals and were treated for their injuries then later released. Buller was taken into custody by additional deputies, who arrived on scene, without further incident.   

Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff Kyle Miers requested assistance from the Louisiana State Police who arrived to complete their investigation of the weapon discharge while JDPSO continues the investigation of Buller. 

Officials said Buller had an active warrant through Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office for failure to register as a sex offender and simple burglary. 

Buller was booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Correctional Center by JDPSO and is being held without bond.
