'We don't need to be like this': Locals react to deadly shooting in Jeanerette
JEANERETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Gunner Plessala and Alyse Landry were home with their kids Saturday afternoon when they heard a "bunch of pops" outside.
"It was pretty rapid. We came outside, we thought the power line was shaking, so we thought a transformer blew or something," Plessala said.
Later they realized the sound they heard was gunfire that erupted nearby, in the 1900 block of Saint Charles Street, where a man was found dead in a vehicle.
"The police said somebody had died. They never even exited the vehicle. I just seen a car pull up right there at the stop sign and stuff like 30 seconds and then they pulled off and they hit a pole," Plessala said.
The Jeanerette Police Department confirmed on Saturday that they were investigating a shooting that was reported around 4:30 p.m. that afternoon. The next morning, authorities identified the victim as 23-year-old Jamul Sparrow Jr. and announced the arrest of one suspect -- a 15-year-old juvenile.
The suspect, whose name was not released by police, faces charges of second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, and illegal possession of a handgun.
Landry said she is against the gun violence occurring in Jeanerette and wishes "it would all just calm down and stop."
"We don't need to be like this. It's a bad reputation for us and we're not like that around here. It needs to be peace and love," Landry said.
Landry said she sends prayers and condolences to the families of both the victim and the suspect.
"The coroner took a while to get here. The poor victim. My heart goes out to their families. They were stuck there under a tarp just covered. My deepest condolences to them definitely," Landry said.
The shooting remains under investigation. If you have any information relating to the incident, contact Jeanerette police at (337) 276-6323.
