WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) -- As more details emerge about a school shooting in Barrow County, Georgia, U.S. officials are reacting to the news.

"This is just a senseless tragedy," Vice President Kamala Harris said at a rally in New Hampshire. Harris also thanked law enforcement at the scene.

"We've got to stop it. And we have to end this epidemic of gun violence in our country once and for all," Harris said.

Former president Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, "Our hearts are with the victims and loved ones of those affected by the tragic event. These cherished children were taken from us far too soon by a sick and deranged monster."

"I'm devastated for the families who have been affected by this terrible tragedy," Attorney General Merrick Garland said.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the FBI and ATF are working with local and state partners to investigate.

"The Justice Department stands ready to provide any resources or support that the Winder community needs in the days ahead," Garland said.

President Joe Biden said in a statement he and Jill are mourning the lives lost and went on to say: "What should have been a joyous back-to-school season...has now turned into another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart."

"Enough is enough," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

The White House called on Congress to pass gun control legislation, and said the federal government is ready to provide resources to the area.

"Students and teachers deserve to know that their schools are safe," Jean-Pierre said.
