Family holds vigil one year after 19-month-old girl dies in a shooting

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- It has been a year since 19-month-old Kaci Cyprian was shot and killed in an officer involved shooting. In an attempt to keep her memory alive, family and friends gathered at Pa Davis Park to hold a vigil in her name.

Cyprian's mother Jowanna Washington said they want to "Get her (Kaci's) name out there, get her story out there and let people know, hey, look, this is happening in our neighborhoods, our communities, and something needs to be done so another family doesn't have to plan vigils and spend all their money on court costs and deal with just the unending pain. This doesn't go away after today."

The shooting happened on South General Marshall Street in Lafayette. Police arrested 30-year-old, John Nicholas. He faces multiple charges including domestic abuse, first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, false imprisonment, and possession of a firearm. Since Kaci's death, the family is still looking for answers as to what exactly happened.

Kaci's father Trenton Cyprian said, "It's been a year, and I know exactly what I knew the morning I found out."

Both Washington and Cyprian have requested body camera footage to be released to them. They still have not been given access to it, which makes them wonder what really happened.

"What are we going to see that we don't want to see or hear, that we don't want to hear," Washington said. "Prove me wrong."

Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office public information officer said in a statement concerning the release of the body camera footage: "The video is being used in conjunction with the prosecution of a crime and will not be released until the case has been fully adjudicated."
