Home invasion shooting in Malta remains under investigation

MALTA, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office announced on Monday that the investigation into a fatal shooting in Malta remains ongoing. The incident took place on June 14 at the Northway Estates Community.

According to the sheriff's office, it was revealed during the investigation that a man, identified as Kurt Hubbard, 49, of Malta, reportedly forced his way into a home at the mobile home park and attacked a resident. Hubbard, who the occupants did not know, allegedly pursued one of the residents into a bedroom, where the other occupants had retreated to.

The investigation determined that a resident of the home armed himself with a shotgun and fired two rounds, striking and killing Hubbard. The home's occupants were interviewed by investigators before being released.

Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo issued a statement on the investigation, saying "I would like to thank the residents of Northway Estates and members of the community who came forward and assisted our investigators. As I stated Friday, I am confident that there is no threat to the community. At this time, the investigation has not revealed any criminal conduct by the resident who appears to have been defending himself inside of his home from a subject who was not known to him. I caution that this investigation is far from over and we will not be making any further statements until it is concluded."

Hubbard reportedly lived at the Locust Grove Motel in Malta. The sheriff's office is being assisted with the investigation by New York State Police.
