Update on Albany officer-involved shooting

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- In a press conference Thursday at 11 a.m., Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins and Mayor Kathy Sheehan provided an update on the officer-involved shooting that happened Wednesday morning. Hawkins says the suspect who died, identified as Ameil Olayeni (28, Albany), died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, per the autopsy report.

In the press conference, Hawkins also mentioned Olayeni sustained a graze wound from a gun, and the gun used against the officer was a ghost gun.

Around 12:30 Wednesday morning, an Albany police officer, identified as Jonathan Damphier, attempted to pull over a car that sped by him. The car did not stop, and after a short chase, was located near North Main Avenue and Western Avenue.

Unbeknownst to Damphier, the suspect, now identified as Olayeni, was out of the car. Hawkins said Olayeni started firing at Damphier, describing the act as “an ambush.” The two then exchanged gunfire. Damphier is still being treated for injuries but is in good spirits.
