Albany man sentenced for 2023 shooting

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- An Albany man has been sentenced for a shooting incident that took place in 2023. Michael Johnson, 41, now faces 15 years in state prison as well as a five year term of post-release supervision.

The indictment alleged that Johnson shot Charles Sojourner near Second Street in Albany in an attempt to kill him on August 29, 2023. Johnson pled guilty to second-degree attempted murder back in November.

Sojourner issued a statement on the sentencing, saying "On August 29, 2023, in front of his children, Michael Johnson walked up to me, and fired at me multiple times. A man I did not know, did not have a history of conflict or violence with. He did not even know my name. He attempted to take my life over trivial circumstances… I wonder if the assailant ever considered how he would contribute to the statistics of children who did not have fathers in their lives...ironically, his thoughtless actions will ultimately keep him from his own children."
