Church Point looking for drive-by shooting suspect
CHURCH POINT, La. (KLFY) -- Authorities are asking for the public's help in locating a suspect in a drive-by shooting in Church Point in January.
Nyllean Riggs, 18, of Church Point, is wanted on charges of assault by drive by shooting, illegal discharge of a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated criminal damage to property and convicted felon in possession of a firearm, police said.
The Church Point Police officers responded Jan. 28 to a report of several shots being fired at the corner of David Street and West Canal Street. Officers recovered 11 .40-caliber shell casings and were told that a person had been shot in the lower back and was at the hospital.
Investigators said the person shot initially began firing at someone in another vehicle who stopped and returned fire, striking him. Investigators later discovered that the initial vehicle the suspects were in was allegedly stolen from Opelousas.
Authorities obtained warrants for Riggs and a juvenile who was also in the suspect's vehicle, police said. Several more arrests of other occupants of both vehicles are pending at this time.
Police said Riggs is a convicted felon with previous weapons violations and is currently on probation.
Anyone who knows Riggs's whereabouts is asked contact their local law enforcement agency or the Church Point Police Department at 337-684-5455. Information received puts Riggs possibly in the Opelousas area, authorities said.
