Mercedes-AMG brings out the CLA 35 Shooting Brake

“SHOOTING brake” is not just a fancy word for a station wagon; it really is a more elegant rendition of what would in most cases be a big box on wheels. Mercedes-AMG demonstrates this in the new CLA 35 4MATIC Shooting Brake, which the carmaker said is “the latest point of entry” to its “world.”

The carmaker noted the five-door model “combines the powerful proportions of a sporty coupe with the decisive extra functionality” brought by the extended roof, large tailgate and a wide rear opening.

Powering the CLA 35 4MATIC Shooting Brake is a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter, turbocharged engine that makes 306hp and 400Nm. Variably distributing this output to the front and rear axles is a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

Mercedes-AMG said the car can accelerate from zero to 100kph in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 250kph.

“The new CLA 35 Shooting Brake, with its expressive design, agile vehicle dynamics and flexible load compartment is an attractive alternative for young customers who lead an active life with various leisure activities. With the Shooting Brake we are offering these individualists access to the exciting world of AMG Driving Performance, which is tailored to their specific requirements,” said Tobias Moers, chairman of the management board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Identifying the CLA 35 Shooting Brake is a long hood with bulging power domes, wide wheel arches, a slim waistline and a compact greenhouse. The AMG-specific radiator grille with its twin louvers and the AMG Line front apron with flics around the air inlet grilles, as well as the front splitter and the inserts on the louvers on the outer air inlet grilles, that characterize the “35” models are also present on the Shooting Brake.

Standard are 18-inch, five-spoke light-alloy wheels while a 19-inch set is an option.

Additionally offered are the AMG Night Package, which basically blacks out most trim including the wheels, and the AMG Style package, which mixes the Night Package with the AMG Aerodynamics Package. This option gets modified front splitter and other aerodynamic appendages.

The CLA 35 Shooting Brake receives the features of the brand’s “35” models, meaning it is fitted with sports seats in black leather; a center console with a touchpad and controls for the three-stage ESP, manual transmission mode and the optional adaptive damping system; and brushed-steel pedals and door sills, among other items. The instrument cluster can display three AMG styles — Classic, Sport and Supersport.

Well, these styles describe a shooting brake as well.
