[Women's Golf] Spring season begins with fifth-place showing

Maitlyn Sanders finished 11th and Elyse Kalb tied for 13th to lead St. Ambrose at the Galesburg Spring Invitational Saturday and Sunday.

Sanders put together rounds of 89 and 90 to finish just a single shot out of a top-10 finish in the Bees' first tournament of the spring. Kalb carded back-to-back 91s for a 182 total.

Abi Scheidecker was a shot back of Kalb, shooting a 92-91 to finish 19th. Emily Jean earned a top-20 finish with her 186 (97-89). Nicole Gordus shot a 211 and Becki Meils opened with a 97 before withdrawing. 

SAU finished fifth in the seven-team event with a 760 (377-383). Carl Sandburg won the tournament with a two-day 714. 

Sanders and three other Bees played as individuals. Ali Scheidecker shot a second-day 90 to finish with a 194, while Kylie Diana recorded a 201 and Aiko Mendoza shot a 208.

Knox College's Samantha Nichols was the individual medalist with a 161 (79-82).

St. Ambrose returns to action April 19-20 at the ONU Spring Intercollegiate at Kankakee Elks Country Club in St. Anne, Ill.
