[Women's Basketball] HIU Runs Past Women's Basketball with Big Third Quarter

SAN DIEGO – After a strong first quarter showing, the SDC women's basketball team looked composed to defeat Hope International in a GSAC bout Tuesday night.

 

But the Royals were able to bounce back from a lackluster quarter to outscore the Hawks 59-30 the rest of the game to defeat SDC 71-45.

 

Shayleen Toehe scored a team-high 10 points off the bench for the Hawks on 4-of-7 shooting. SDC shot 30 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 21 times.

 

The Royals were the ones to get off to a good start for HIU. They scored six of the first seven points scored in the first three minutes. Hannah Myers hit a triple to bring the deficit down to two and Kaitlyn McKinney free throws tied it up. Dayna Hansen's free throw gave the Hawks their first lead of the game with 4:43 to play in the first. Toehe added a free throw and Mykiah Trotter added a buck to give the Hawks their biggest lead of the quarter at 10-6.

 

SDC led by as much as five in second quarter as Erica McCarter and Colleen Murphy's layup helped to get there. But the Royals regained the lead with 1:45 left before halftime with Rhiana Dougan's 3-point play saw the Royals lead by two at the break.

 

The third quarter was the breaking point for HIU as they went on a 28-4 run to put the game away from the Hawks. HIU outscored SDC 32-8 in the third.

 

SDC will travel to The Master's on Saturday.
