Svi Mykhailiuk shakes shooting slump in Lakers 119-105 win over Warriors

A few Lakers rookies made key contributions in the team’s preseason finale.

The Los Angeles Lakers ended the preseason on a high note with a 119-105 win over the Golden State Warriors on Friday at the SAP Center behind 22 points from rookie Svi Mykhailiuk.

Going into Friday night’s contest, Mykhailiuk was shooting a lowly 30 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from the 3-point line. In 31 minutes for the Lakers, Mykhailiuk shot 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from the field and 40 percent (2-of-5) from behind the arc. He also dished out 4 assists.

After looking like a complete steal in at NBA’s Las Vegas Summer League tournament in July, Mykhailiuk fell back to earth in the preseason. Hopefully Friday’s game was the start of Mykhailiuk’s road back to the regular season rotation.

Mykhailiuk’s fellow rookie Isaac Bonga also had a coming out party of sorts on Friday, scoring 12 points on 80 percent shooting from the field to go along with 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Listed at 6-foot-7, Bonga has the size to play out on the wing in the NBA, but he showed why he is best suited at point guard on Friday.

Bonga is expected to spend most, if not all of the regular season in the G League with the South Bay Lakers, but he’s come a long way since his disaster of a debut at summer league.

However, the most impressive stat line of the night was that everyone left the game unscathed.

Sure, Michael Beasley and Lance Stephenson were ejected from the game (because of course they were) but no one was physically carried off the floor. In the preseason finale, that’s about as much as you can ask for.

The Lakers will have a few days to sharpen things up before the regular season finale on Thursday against the Portland Trailblazers. Barring a few unfortunate last-minute injuries, Mykhailiuk and Bonga won’t be the stars of that game, but it was still fun to watch them pretend during this one.
