Grayson Allen will work out for the Lakers on Friday

The Lakers will host controversial Duke star Grayson Allen on Friday for a pre-draft workout.

Controversial Duke shooting guard Grayson Allen will be a participant in the Los Angeles Lakers’ pre-draft workout on Friday, according to Bill Oram of the Orange County Register. Allen spent four years with the Blue Devils before declaring for the 2018 NBA draft in March.

Even the most casual college basketball fans know who Allen is and unfortunately it’s not because of his talent as a scorer. While Allen did have a successful college career with Duke, winning the NCAA championship in 2015, his legacy was tarnished by a series of suspensions due to seemingly malicious plays on the court.

Allen has since said he has learned from his mistakes, but NBA teams have every reason to be wary of his behavioral issues. However, if Allen can stay out of trouble, he wouldn’t be such a bad with for the Lakers in the second round.

Jonathan Givony of ESPN has Allen going to the Atlanta Hawks with the No. 30 pick in the draft this summer and with how he tested athletically at the NBA draft combine last week, there’s a chance he rises with a few more private workouts. But considering there will likely be younger, less problematic options in the first round, Allen could slip to the Lakers with the No. 47 pick.

Allen played alongside Lakers forward and former No. 2 pick Brandon Ingram at Duke during the 2015-16 season, Allen’s best individual year with the Blue Devlis. During that season, Allen averaged 21.6 points on over 40 percent shooting from behind the arc while contributing 4.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals.

There’s no doubt Allen has talent, but there are legitimate questions about his attitude and his upside. If the Lakers picked him up with the No. 47 pick, there would be some warranted criticism, but then again, when is the last time the Lakers’ scouting department has been wrong about a guy?
