Webb Simpson stretches The Players Championship lead to 7 shots

Webb Simpson opened with a birdie and didn’t slow down from there Saturday, shooting a 4-under-par 68 that gave him a seven-shot lead at The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Simpson improved to 19-under 197, tying the 54-hole record set by Greg Norman in 1994.

As he pursues his fifth career PGA Tour title, Simpson has history on his side. No one has ever lost a seven-shot lead in the final round in PGA Tour history.

“I’m trying to just look forward, do what I always do on a Saturday night of a golf tournament and get ready tomorrow morning,” Simpson said. “And that’s kind of where I’m at.
