Lakers Free Agency Rumors: Dion Waiters meeting with Lakers, according to report

The Lakers are meeting up with one of Rob Pelinka’s former players.

The Los Angeles Lakers are set to meet with unrestricted free agent shooting guard Dion Waiters Sunday night, reports Michael Scotto of Basketball Insiders.

Waiters opted-out of the final year of his contract with the Miami Heat, leaving a paltry $3 million on the table to cash in on his best seasons.

Dion averaged 15.8 points while putting up career-highs in assists (4.3) and rebounds (3.3) per game. It was also his best year from beyond the arc, shooting 39.5 percent from deep.

The Lakers have made it clear shooting is their biggest need during this free agency period, and Waiters might be an interesting answer at a position where the team also lacks depth. It’s unclear what kind of offer Dion might be looking for, but it probably doesn’t hurt the Lakers that Pelinka was his former agent. LA had a conversation with another former Pelinka client, Andre Iguodala, as well.

Magic Johnson and Pelinka have stuck to their low profile plans and this Waiters report is the most significant report linked to the team yet. It’s a situation that’s definitely worth keeping an eye on over the next 24 hours.

That first signing has yet to come for the Lakers, but the market is sorting itself out quickly.
