Safety Boat Course – March 21st & 22nd

Objective

The aim of this Irish Sailing syllabus course is to introduce candidates to the techniques and skills used in powerboats which are:

    –    escorting racing fleets of dinghies, windsurfers and canoes, 

    –    providing safety and rescue cover for training fleets, and 

    –    assisting in the various race management duties. 

This course will enhance your powerboat skills, provider greater confidence in race management/events, increase your safety / risk assessment capabilities and where relevant provide sailing instructors with a key qualification.

Dates / Location

21st and 22nd March at the RSGYC

Previous Knowledge/ Course Qualifications

Participants must hold the ISA National Powerboat Certificate or an equivalent certificate, and are an experienced powerboat helm.

It is strongly recommended that at least one member of a safety boat’s crew should hold a first aid certificate and the Short Range (SRC) VHF radio operator’s certificate.

Types of Boat

The course may be conducted in either a planing or displacement boat suitable for use in open sea.

Duration

The Safety Boat Course will consist of a minimum of 16 hours contact time. The full IS course contains 3 Modules but this course will not address ‘racing’ as is contained in Module 3.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous throughout the course.
