The Summer is Officially Over! RCYC’s 2025 Summer Series Concludes with Thrilling Final Races
They say all good things come to an end, and this week saw the concluding races of the RCYC’s 2025 summer keelboat series.
Both Thursday and Friday evening were fresh, Friday in particular providing westerly gusts that put fleet through their paces.
As this was the final week of the August/September league, prizegiving was held in the clubhouse after racing. On the Thursday League non-spinnaker the results were the same for IRC and ECHO. In 3rd place was Sean Hanley’s Luas, in 2nd was Frank Caul and John Molloy’s Prince of Tides but the skipper filling the trophies was Ian Hickey on Cavatina.
In the Spinnaker classes, Fiona Young’s North Star came 3rd in ECHO and Derry Good’s Summer light was 2nd . In IRC Ria Lyden’s Ellida was 3rd, in 2nd was North Star but it was Andrew Crosbie who was making room over his fireplace by winning the silverware in IRC and ECHO on Knot on Call.
On Friday night White Sail, 3rd place went to the Collins family on Sepideh, 2nd was Derry Good’s Summer Light and the winner of the August/September league was Conor Hanlon’s Lapwing.
A special shout of sportsmanship must go to the crew of Sepideh who abandoned their race, and with it their chance to win the league, to stand by in support of another boat who required assistance. Thanks also to the Port of Cork and in particular, the Crosshaven RNLI . Their readiness, professionalism, and commitment to safety ensure that all who take to the water do so with reassurance and support. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated team of volunteers standing by.
Thanks to races officers Barry Rose and Michael McCann and their teams, indeed thank you to ALL the Race Officials. Without these volunteers, the racing simply wouldn’t happen! Thanks to Bob for his photo’s and to Ann, Amy and all the staff who look after us so well every week.
The summer series, from May onwards, our Thursday and Friday leagues were very strongly supported with an average of 27 boats racing in every league. A sincere thanks to you, the members for committing to club racing.
Although the summer series has wrapped, the racing calendar is far from over. The Cork Buoy Race took place on Saturday, and the highly anticipated Naval Race—the final leg of the Triple Crown trilogy—is set for September 20th. After that, the Autumn Series kicks off on Sunday, September 28th, running for five consecutive Sundays. And finally, as the chill returns to Cork Harbour, the year will conclude with the ever-popular Winter League.
