Royal Cork Yacht Club’s August/September Keelboat league kicks off in style
The RCYC’s summer Keelboat leagues continue to draw fantastic support from our members and we are seeing double figures racing each evening, even at a time when a lot of our members have headed west or to the sun! Let’s keep this momentum going and have as many boats as possible racing for the remainder of the league.
We are 2 weeks in now and so far our winners on Thursdays have been Craig O’Neill’s J24, “legal Alien” and Derry Good’s “Summer Light” who won ECHO Spin and in ECHO White Sail Paul O’Shea has taken an early lead by winning on both nights on his Jeanneau 36 “Elegance”. In the IRC division, Ronan and John Downing’s “Miss Whiplash” is showing how it’s done by winning Spinnaker on both nights and in White Sail, Ian Hickey’s “Cavatina” is also leading the way by taking 2 bullets.
On Friday nights it’s all to play for. On the 2nd August Paul O’Shea came 3rd with the Foster family’s Beneteau 311 “Clodagh” taking 2nd place but the winner on the night was John O’Connor and John Hanley on “Fast Buck”. Last week, in a fresh South Westerly, the Foster’s came 3rd on “Clodagh”, Paul O’Shea was 2nd but the winners were the McGrath family on their Dehler 34, “Big Mc”.
It was fantastic to see a great supporter of Friday night racing, Peter Webster on “Thistle” on the water competing again!
This is a seven week series so if you haven’t raced yet, there will be two discards so let’s see you out this week! Thanks as always to our Race Officers, Paul Tingle and Richard Leonard for Thursdays and Niall Deasy for both Fridays, We have had four nights of fantastic racing. Thanks to Sean for doing results remotely from West Cork and of course, to Ann, Amy and all the staff. Big thanks also to Heineken and CH Marine for supporting our summer leagues.
