Paddling news

This week’s news comes from Rob who delivers a powerful story from his experience at The Doctor last weekend.

‘The Doctor’ 23 November 2019
The white sand and turquoise waters of Rottnest Island in WA frame the start of this unique 28 kilometre race.  The Doctor is arguably the world’s best downwind race and 450 entrants from all over the world from Ireland to Iceland, from Murwillumbah to Mumbai, were the proof in the pudding as they lined up at the start in surf skis, outrigger canoes and stand up paddle-boards.  ‘The Doctor’, named for that same afternoon wind that gave added bounce to Lillee’s blinding fast deliveries at the WACA, did not disappoint with 20 knot winds gusting up to 25 knots.  To accompany the 20 knot winds at our backs, a 2 metre swell created full throttle down wind conditions.  I was pumped, fit, hard as, and ready.

The course is quite simple, only two turns, the second is a marker to keep you away from the reef. Effectively a wild ride downwind almost straight back to Sorrento beach. The Saturday race was the culmination of a week of beautiful events in a great location.

The race is however, not for the faint of heart. As a paddler with just over 12 months experience, I found it a real challenge.  The two metre swell came in huge sets about every 15 minutes and were slightly offset to the desired direction.  I capsized about a dozen times including a desperately tired moment of doubt and pain at the 20km mark where I waved the paddle for a few minutes for a rescue.  However after giving myself a good talking to, I decided that after a drink and gel and a bit of a relax it was better to re attempt a remount than wait for motivation from a man in a grey suit.  I did feel guilty for giving in to thoughts of abandoning the race but felt so much better when I saw the rescue boat was helping an exhausted paddler that had set off their flare as they had missed the turning marker and were on the wrong side of the reef.

It wasn’t the end of my trials as I had a couple more capsizes to right including one about 500 metres from the finish.  Despite at that stage being far too expert at the business of remounting than I ever wanted to be, my last moment swim gave a slight advantage to another valiant paddler who went past me to take the highly sought after 412th position.

A big difference from Sydney harbour conditions, and a fantastic challenge that is recommended for all paddlers with suitable ocean paddling experience.

I am doing it again next year, and for any inspiring Doctor entrants I can recommend The World’s Greatest Time Trial every Saturday morning at Rose Bay, as the best possible preparation.  Come join us – you know you want to.

Ramp etiquette tips:

We know it’s a difficult time during ramp construction, however let’s all …

Be safety conscious. Booms can swing with wind change.  Pedestrians and young children are unaware of the dangers be very careful when crossing the footpath.
Please do not queue across the pedestrian footpath outside the Club. Move boats forward when washing.
Use the ramp for launch and retrieval only.  Not for parking.  Not for rigging.
Please DO NOT LEAVE DOLLIES ON THE RAMP.  One person leaves a dolly on the ramp then next person follows that example and the next and pretty quickly the ramp is unusable.  Store dollies on the grass or on the brick pavers behind the winch.  Stack the dollies to minimise the space they consume.  Place them out of the way.
