Sewing battens into the sail

I recently lost a batten so I'm planning to sew my battens into my training sail. I have a sail needle and whipping twine but I'm not sure what technique to use. A typical sewing knot in the whipping twine pulls out very easily. And the sail needle makes quite a big hole, so I don't know how to prevent the twine from pulling through the hole. Any guidance would be great.
