Cardiff Met v Pontypridd – Matchday Preview
Next up for Pontypridd RFC is an Admiral Premiership clash away against Cardiff Met on Saturday 4th April. The match will kick off at 2:30pm at Cyncoed Campus.
Last season Ponty travelled to Cyncoed for the first time since 28th January 2017 – the sides locked horns in the Welsh Cup on that occasion. Fast forward to 19th October 2024 and Ponty and The Archers met at Cyncoed in the Premiership following the hosts’ well deserved promotion the previous season. In a closely fought first half which the Valley Commandos edged, they put full foot to the throttle in the second period to run out winners by 42 points to 12.
Cardiff Met visited Sardis earlier this season and the match proved to be an attritional affair with no quarter given. Pontypridd’s points came through tries from Louis Tovey, Garyn Daniel, Joe Miles and a Jorge Lucey conversion – these contributed to a 19-12 win.
Pontypridd did not play on Saturday due to the weekend being one of the team’s designated ‘bye’ weeks. The big match of the round saw Merthyr head to Beddau and the Ironmen turned a 12-3 half time deficit into a 17-12 win at Mount Pleasant Park. That victory sees them go top of the table, leapfrogging Ponty who now sit in second.
Cardiff Met currently occupy the last relegation spot having suffered a 21-13 reverse away at Bargoed last time out. But it’s worth noting that The Archers only lost 26-25 to Beddau the Saturday prior to last, and suffered the heartbreak of another one-point loss to Llangennech 34-33 in the matchday before that.
It’s now at the stage of the season when there’s something riding on pretty much every match which adds to the hype and excitement, and this Saturday is no different – c’mon the Pont!
