LUCTONIANS 52 – 7 REDRUTH

REDRUTH JUST COULDN’T GAIN A FOOTHOLD

Luctonians, much like the weather at Mortimer Park, had a real spring in their step as they treated Redruth to a real rugby try-fest. Playing well within themselves at times, Lucs scored almost at will against a very game Redruth, who had opportunities, but the home side’s well drilled and organised defence kept them at bay when they did have half a chance.

The home side were on top as early as the 6th minute, when James Mear was at the bottom of a trademark Lucs driving maul from close in; Tom Jones converting (7-0).

Prop, Brad Smith was next to be driven over, with the home side dominant as they lead 12-0 after 10 minutes. Yellow cards for foul play for Joe White Lucs and Tom Cowan-Dickie Redruth followed, when Redruth were upping the ante but, for all their hard work, they were thwarted by the home side.

Lucs added to their tally when James Mear collected his second score on 23mins, when again driven over from another driving maul, followed an excellent touch kick from Tom Jones, who converted to lead 19-0.

Bob Bray saw yellow for the home side, again for foul play, but this didn’t disturb the home side’s momentum as they scored a fine try from wing Rob Aikman, following an excellent line break from Man of Match Caleb Montgomery and live wire scrum half Owen Randell. Jones converted, with the home side going in at half time for hot tea, leading comfortably.

Redruth, try as they could, could not gain any foothold in the game, with the home side dominating procedures with their very direct running and passing display. Another superb kick from Jones saw home captain Ben Link score his first of a brace from yet another driving maul; Jones converting to lead 33-0 on 46 minutes.

Wing Rob Aikman was then to add his second, following a superb line break from centre Frank Kelly (38-0) .

Redruth did break their duck, when centre Sam James twisted and turned his way through Lucs’ solid wall defence. Joseph Cummins converted, to keep the away side score board ticking (38-7). But the home side were ruthless and Link added his second, again from close in, following yet another deft kick to touch from Jones, who duly obliged with the conversion on 64 minutes to lead 45-7.

The try of the game was yet to come, when MotM Caleb Montgomery exchanged passes with Frank Kelly, whose direct run from halfway and return off load to Montgomery put him away to score the final points, and break the 50 point barrier with a few minutes left on the clock. Jones converted to give the home side a comfortable victory.

Luctonians go into the Easter break still ahead of third place Hinckley by 5 points, with Camborne now almost bolt on league winners, being 10 points clear with 3 games to play, although they still have to visit Mortimer Park in April. With Loughborough Students away next, Luctonians will be looking to keep their fresh momentum goin, before Camborne and a league final game away at Lymm.
