Old Wesley has learnt with sadness of the death of John Gates. A wiry back row forward, Gateser played senior rugby during the late 1970s. He went on to play for a number of the junior teams and was captain of the 3rds team that won the J2 League in 1983. He continued to play on the lower teams winning a Guilfoyle Cup medal in 1988. After retirement from playing he took up coaching and coached the J4 team that won the league in 1993
Old Wesley extends its deepest sympathies to John’s wife Deirdre, his six children, including Maurice who also played for Old Wesley, his grandchildren and the rest of his family. He will be sadly missed in Old Wesley
