Llanelli Wanderers v Pontypridd – Matchday Preview
Next up for Pontypridd RFC is an Admiral Premiership clash away against Llanelli Wanderers on Saturday 21st March. The match takes place at Stradey Park and will kick off at 2:30pm.
Saturday’s encounter will be Ponty’s maiden visit to the home of the Wanderers, although ‘Stradey Park’ has been synonymous with numerous trips down west for Pontypridd over many decades.
The first time the two clubs had ever met was earlier this season on Saturday 8th November at Sardis Road, and the match saw no less than 89 points and 13 tries scored that afternoon. Nine of those tries were scored by the Valley Commandos – Joe Davies (2), Louis Tovey, Joe Miles, Iestyn Harris (2), Dale Stuckey, Garyn Daniel and Jack Davies all touched down that afternoon and in turn contributed to a 57-32 Ponty win.
Pontypridd remain top of the Admiral Premiership standings, three points ahead of Merthyr in second and four ahead of Beddau in third, but the the chasing teams have matches in hand.
Llanelli Wanderers currently occupy 12th place and the last relegation spot in the table in what is their first season at Premiership level. However, the Wanderers do have games in hand over a few of the teams above them, and enjoyed an excellent bonus-point win away at Bargoed by 44 points to 36 in their last outing on 7th March. Ponty’s last match was also on the same aforementioned date, and won by a similar 47-35 scoreline against Neath at Sardis.
It’s always exciting to visit new grounds, and this week will be no different. Remarkably, this Saturday will mark Pontypridd’s first game of rugby in the town of Llanelli since 22nd December 2018 – more than 7 years ago!
