Historic Debut for Old Wesley Visually Impaired Rugby Team in Belfast
Old Wesley RFC marked a significant milestone this weekend as the Old Wesley RFC Business Network Visually Impaired Rugby Team made its first-ever appearance in Belfast.
The visit represented a landmark moment for the team, reflecting both how far the programme has come and the growing momentum behind visually impaired rugby on the island of Ireland. Blessed with excellent weather and an outstanding venue, the day provided the perfect stage to showcase the game and the values behind it.
The development and leadership of visually impaired rugby in Ireland has been strongly shaped by Ian McKinley, a former international rugby player and respected pundit. Ian has been a prominent advocate for inclusive rugby and is widely recognised as one of the pioneers in bringing visually impaired rugby to Ireland through his work with Vision Sports Ireland.
A combined training session with EASTS Touch Rugby was a highlight of the visit, underlining the importance of collaboration and shared learning across the rugby community. Old Wesley RFC would also like to extend sincere thanks to Ulster Rugby for ensuring the Affidea Stadium was fully accessible for players, and to RNIB Northern Ireland, whose members attended to support the team and experience the session.
The Visually Impaired Rugby programme continues to grow, challenge perceptions, and demonstrate the power of inclusive sport. This debut in Belfast represents another major step forward on that journey — not only for the players involved, but for the wider rugby community.
Old Wesley RFC is proud to be part of a movement that shows how rugby can build confidence, strengthen communities, and create opportunities for all, with the continued support of partners such as Vision Sports Ireland.
